Leonard Shapiro is a highly respected Consultant Cardiologist specialising in coronary angioplasty and non-coronary intervention and valve disease. Dr Shapiro is one of the most widely experienced general and interventional cardiologists in this country.

Dr Shapiro practices in the picturesque University town of Cambridge in the UK, and is based at the world famous Papworth Hospital. Papworth is one of the largest cardiac units in the UK. Dr Shapiro practices privately at the BUPA Cambridge Lea hospital which is situated 3 miles north of Cambridge's historic city centre well placed for transport links as it is near the A14 and M11 junction 14 .
Dr. Shapiro graduated with Honours from the University of Manchester in 1976, having previously gained a 1st Class Honours Degree in Medical Biochemistry. Dr. Shapiro undertook a research degree(MD) in diabetic Heart Disease that was completed in 1981. Dr Shapiro had post-graduate training in London at the Hammersmith Hospital and then the Brompton Hospital before completely his training at the National Heart Hospital. He was appointed as a consultant cardiologist at Papworth in Cambridge in 1988.
Dr. Shapiro has been elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
Dr. Shapiro has other diverse clinical interests and is the medical Advisor to the Football Association, especially involved in screening footballers for heart disease. Dr Shapiro established a nationwide cardiac screening programme to look for life threatening heart problems in young footballers to prevent the tragedy of sudden death. Dr Shapiro, in conjunction with the medical department of the football association and the professional footballers association, has examined nearly 10000 footballers in this ongoing project. Dr Shapiro has a special interest in the heart in athletes and has published widely on this subject.
