Dr. Shapiro graduated with Honours from the University of Manchester in 1976 having previously gained a 1st Class Honours Degree in Medical Biochemistry. He undertook a Research Doctorate Degree (MD) in Heart Disease in diabetes, that was completed in 1981.
His post-graduate training was undertaken in London at the Hammersmith Hospital and then the Brompton Hospital, before completing his training at the National Heart Hospital. He was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge in 1988. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.

Dr. Shapiro has three children, the youngest of which was born in 2010.

In his personal life he ensures that he practices what he preaches, by eating healthily, regularly training in the gym, as well as club level swimming, cycling and running keeping him in good shape for his life and his sport which is Olympic distance triathlon.
A keen Arsenal supporter and a season ticket holder, he attends as many games as possible.
Dr. Shapiro has had wide media exposure over the years, regularly featuring in ‘At Home Family Health with Dr. Chris Steele’ Magazine. He also featured in a TV programme on BBC Channel 2 for ‘Horizon’ and was in an episode of ‘Embarrassing Bodies’ for Channel 4. He frequently presents on national and local radio.
